Salisbury Officials Zero In on Adult Store

Don Rush

Salisbury officials say they plan to tighten the rules for stores that sell sexually oriented merchandise.

The plan has been in the works since the store called “The Red Light  District” opened up on Route 13 in August of 2013.

To comply with the city code the shop moved its adult items from the floor to the wall and paid the city a $750 fine to keep its Red Light District sign.

The proposed ordinance would close that loophole by including cabinets, shelves or racks which rise from the floor.

In addition, the ordinance will revise the definition of a sex shop to mean 15 percent of the business items or 15 percent of its profits are from adult items.

Originally, it was 20 percent.

The ordinance was to be voted on tonight but has been delay due to the winter weather.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Cynthia Macdonald  the attorney for the store’s owner B&Z Investments told the paper that there were would be no comment until the company had a chance to review the proposed ordinance.
