Salisbury Mayor's Plan to Redraw Council Maps

official photo

Mayor Jim Ireton wants to expand the number of City Council districts from two to five in Salisbury.

Under the Mayor’s plan that would take effect with the November 2015 election when all of the seats are on the ballot.

The proposal would include two minority majority districts.

But such change would require a judge’s approval as a result of the 1987 lawsuit that produced the current lone minority-majority district now occupied by Shanie Shields.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that April Jackson, the daughter of the man who brought the suit, applauds the plan that would expand the number of such districts.
