DOVER, Del. (AP) - The Delaware State Police department has enlisted three retired racehorses for the creation of its first mounted patrol unit.
The horses, representing the state's three counties, will be used primarily for ceremonial purposes and community events. Their owners will pay all their bills, and they will covered by the police department's insurance when on duty.
The horses are Smarty's Gold, a chestnut gelding and the son of 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones; Ramblin Romeo, a bay gelding; and Potomac Affair, a standardbred.
The horses made their first appearance at the Delaware State Fair in Harrington last week.
