Rep. John Carney Holds Discussion on High Cost of College

Don Rush

DOVER, Del. (AP) - U.S. Rep. John Carney is joining other Delawareans to discuss the rising cost of college.

Carney planned to host a roundtable discussion in Dover on Monday, the first in a series of such meetings about the challenges of higher education costs and possible solutions.

Carney says the cost of higher education is rising at an unsustainable rate, more than 570 percent over the past three decades, and that total U.S. student loan debt recently topped $1 trillion, more than both auto loans and credit card debt.

The University of Delaware said last week it was raising tuition and fees for in-state undergraduate students by almost 4 percent to more than $12,000 a year. Tuition and fees for out-of-state students is increasing by 4 percent to just under $30,000 a year.
