Rehoboth Beach Outfall Survives Appeal

Don Rush

An effort to halt the Rehoboth Beach outfall has been defeated.

The Delaware Environmental Appeals Board voted 5-to-1 against an appeal by Suzanne Thurman executive director of the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute in Lewes.

She said there were reasonable doubts about its effectiveness.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the $52.5 million outfall would allow treated wastewater to flow into the ocean.

The project came in response to a court order that the city stop discharging wastewater into the Lewes & Rehoboth Canal near the entrance to Rehoboth Bay.

Mayor Paul Kuhns told the paper that he was pleased with the outcome.
