Region Marks Veterans Day

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware political leaders are taking time out to commemorate Veterans Day.

Gov. Jack Markell planned to join members of Delaware's congressional delegation and other officials Wednesday for the state's annual Veterans Day service.

Delaware National Guard Adjutant General Major General Francis Vavala also is participating in the event,  which will include local high school bands, leaders from religious organizations and community members,

The National Veterans Day Committee in Washington, D.C., has designated Veterans Day in New Castle as a National Veterans Day regional site.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Terry McAuliffe and other officials are scheduled to speak at a Veterans Day ceremony in Richmond.

The event is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Virginia War Memorial. It will also include a wreath-laying ceremony, posting of the colors and other ceremonial components to honor veterans.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine will speak at the Veterans Day commemoration at the George Marshall International Center in Leesburg. Kaine is a member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees.

Homeless Vets

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is set to announce that Virginia has helped 1,400 homeless veterans find permanent housing in the past year.

The governor and U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro are set to make the announcement Wednesday at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond.

Virginia has a veteran population of about 800,000, according to state officials.

McAuliffe has made ending veteran homelessness a key priority.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - If you served your nation, parking fees will be waived at all Virginia state parks on Veterans Day.

Besides the free parking Wednesday, state parks also will offer activities associated with Veterans Day. Sky Meadows State Park in northern Virginia, for instance, will be home to a 5K run/walk to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

Flag retirement ceremonies will also be held at a half-dozen state parks. They are Chippokes Plantation in Surry, Hungry Mother in Marion, James River in Gladstone, Kiptopeke on the Eastern Shore, Powhatan and Staunton River.
