Rebecca T. Ruark Wins Skipjack Race, The Journal of The Kathryn

The strong winds from Tropical Storm Hermine propelled Wadie Murphy’s Rebecca T. Ruark to win the 57 Annual Skipjack race on Labor Day off Deal Island.

Coming in second was the Thomas Clyde captained by Lawrence Murphy and coming in third was the Ida Mae commanded by Sean Ridgely.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the Fannie Daugherty had to return to the dock at the beginning of the race because a song wind broke away its jib sail.

This was Wadie Murphy’s 11th victory in the skipjack race.

The one boat missing from the race was the City of Crisfield normally commanded by Daddy Art Daniels.

It’s being refurbished this year and Daniels is currently in an assisted living facility.

Captain Stoney Whitelock, the race director, told the Daily Times that there had been 11 boats expected this year but because of the winds only eight actually ran the race.
