Push Back On Mayor's Hint to Replace Wilmington Police Chief

depolicechiefscouncil.org

Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams may have a hard time finding support on the City Council to fire Police Chief Christine Dunning in the wake numerous shootings this year – the latest two murder taking place in recent days.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that seven of the council members say they would oppose such a dramatic shake up.

Two others, the paper reports, said they did not have enough information while the News Journal could not contact the remaining four.

The Mayor has the power to fire the chief without approval of the council.

But the News Journal reports that those interviewed said Dunning, who took office at the beginning of the year with Williams, said she needs more time to carry out her plans to fighting crime.

Williams recently told WDEL radio that the department may need new leadership on the force.
