There was a public signing yesterday of a 30-foot-long 1,000 pound steel beam on the campus of Salisbury University.

It will be put on the top floor of the new 122-thousand square-foot building that will be the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons.

Salisbury University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach told those gathered in Red Square that this was a celebration of a building that will benefit not only the campus but the community.

“The Guerrieri Academic Commons is not only expected to become the epicenter of academic life at Salisbury University, but its programs, spaces and services will be a boon to the greater community as well.”

She added, “The regional economic impact of this project is estimated at $238 million and it is supporting and 350 local jobs.”

The Academic Commons will provide space for the new library as well as a home for the Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History.

It’s the largest academic building in the history of Salisbury University costing an estimated $117 million.
