The ponies made their way another year from Assateague Island to Chincoteague yesterday.

The Saltwater Cowboys as they are known herded the ponies on their annual swim.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that some territorial stallions and mares did clashed when they went looking for their foals.

Today an auction is being held with the proceeds going to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department.

The auction began at 8 a.m. at the Chincoteague Carnival Grounds.

Those not sold or are returned will spend another year on Assateague Island.

The annual swim was made famous by Marguerite Henry in her famous 1940’s novel ”Misty of Chincoteague”.
