Piping Plovers Hatch in Cape Henlopen State Park

LEWES, Del. (AP) - Delaware officials say four piping plover chicks have hatched from this year's only nest at Gordons Pond in Cape Henlopen State Park.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control says the chicks hatched last week and both adults were seen with the chicks that afternoon.

Over at the Point, three pairs of plovers have set up foraging territories along the bayside with their chicks that hatched earlier this month, and have been seen going back into the dunes for shelter and rest.

Division of Fish and Wildlife Biologist Matthew Bailey says the chicks are still vulnerable to hypothermia so they only observe them from afar and don't yet have a full count of the chicks.
