Tony Sterling III, who was hailed as transforming the history of the Salisbury Fire Department, died Monday morning at the age of 67.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the former deputy Fire Chief was instrumental in opening up the volunteer ranks to recruit volunteers as young as 19 years old.

Sterling was a volunteer fire fighter from the mid-1970’s through the early 90’s often working behind the scenes after that.

Bryan Records, an assistant chief for the department told the paper, that Sterling would stay up all night running calls and then go to work all day.

He was employed at Verizon as a lineman and eventually supervisor.
