ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Courts in Maryland's upper Eastern Shore are now only accepting electronic filings.

The Maryland Judiciary says in a statement that as of Monday, electronic filing will be mandatory for attorneys filing civil and criminal cases in District Court and Circuit Court in Caroline, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot counties.

Attorneys have been filing electronically since October 2014 when the Maryland Electronic Courts system launched in Anne Arundel County.

Mary Ellen Barbera, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Maryland, said in a statement that the system is helping eliminate the court system's reliance on paper files and making courts more accessible to litigants.
