O'Malley Offers Budget Cuts to Close Deficit

Don Rush

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Gov. Martin O'Malley is bringing a proposal to the Board of Public Works to address more than $400 million of a budget shortfall.

The outgoing Democratic governor is planning to bring about $211 million in spending reductions to the board Wednesday morning. The plan also includes about $199 million in fund transfers and revenues to help fill the gap.

The spending reductions are needed to help address a drop in state revenue projections. Maryland is facing an overall shortfall of about $1.2 billion for this fiscal year and the next, which begins July 1.

The board includes O'Malley, Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy Kopp.

O'Malley has attributed a decline in projected state revenues to the impact of federal cuts on federal workers who live in Maryland.
