No More Summer Reading List for Some Students in Cape Henlopen

book cover

There will be no reading list this summer for in-coming high school students in the Cape Henlopen school district.

Earlier this month the board dropped from its summer reading list “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” about a teenager who discovers she is gay.

Last night on a 6-to-1 vote last night the board decided to return to the district previous practice.

That requires college preparatory students to read one book for the summer and honors students two books.

Only Noble Prettyman voted against the motion.

While freshman board member Alison Meyer had supported keeping the original list, she backed doing away with it as the best outcome for the board.

Board members had complained about the coarse language in “The Miseducation of Cameron Post”, not about the sexual orientation of its main character.

Dropping the book from the reading list drew national attention and even provoked a sharply worded letter from its author emily m. danforth.
