No charges will be filed for the graffiti denouncing Confederate General John Winder on the sidewalks and steps around the Wicomico County Courthouse.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the Salisbury police are reviewing video from surveillance cameras in the downtown area looking for the perpetrators.

But police say because the graffiti was done in colored chalk which can be washed off there was no permanent damage done to the property.

Phrases such as “Tear Down Winder and “Winder is Scum” were written on the sidewalk and steps.

This was an apparent reference to the calls to take down a historical marker on Main Street noting the general’s service to the Confederacy.

The plaque originally was located in front of the courthouse.

Winder oversaw the notorious Confederate prisoner of war camps and faced charges after the Civil War.

The graffiti also noted that the 1931 lynching at the courthouse of Matthew Williams an African American who was accused of murder.
