Newark Mayoral Candidate Forum

Around 350 to 400 residents of Newark got a chance to see the seven candidates who are vying to succeed outgoing Mayor Vance Funk in a special election on November 26th.

During the forum held by the New Castle County League of Women Voters at the Newark Senior Center last night the plan by Data Centers LLC to build a $1 billion facility with a natural gas power plant took center stage.

It’s to be constructed on the University of Delaware’s Science Technology & Advanced Research campus.

Polly Sierer said she wants to create a steering committee to monitor the future of the facility.

Council member Mark Morehead said he would not comment on an issue that could come before him.

Amy Roe, who has been active in Newark Residents Against the Power Plant, told the gathering that she would work to be proactive in verifying claims made about the project.

Don DelCollo said he’d vote against the facility if given a chance, but would work to move the power plant to a more appropriate location with an adequate water supply.

Robin Harland called the University’s campaign in favor of the project “a snow job.”

And, Matthew Vento said what concerns him is the size of the plant and what it is going to be used for.
