There’s been a delay in the expansion of Newark Charter School amid concerns about the institution’s diversity.
Delaware Education Secretary Lillian Lowery announced that she had decided to wait until the education board’s meeting in April.
Lowery got an email this week from the American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware saying that the Newark Charter School contributes to the re-segregation of public education.
In addition, it said that the lack of a free and reduced lunch program violates federal and state laws.
In the end Lowery cited the need to sift through the large amount of feedback and concerns that she had gotten about the expansion.
Many parents at a public hearing last week feared that the expansion would hurt high schools in the Christina School District.
But, there were other parents there, who did want their children to attend the Charter School.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that Lowery says this was the first time – to her knowledge -- a vote on a charter application had ever been delayed.
