Dover police have a new Street Crimes Unit after three people were shot during the first weekend of this month.
It will be staffed by four officers and a sergeant and is part of zero-tolerance approach to law enforcement.
But, Lt. Jason Pires told the Wilmington News Journal that it’s clear that the department needs more police officers.
Sgt. Chad Bernat, who heads the unit, says it will focus on getting drugs and illegal weapons off the streets.
But it will also make arrests for minor violations like public consumption of alcohol.
The unit is temporary and will last through the end of the year.
