WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The Delaware Solid Waste Authority has a new recycling facility near the Port of Wilmington.
Officials cut the ribbon Thursday on the 64,000-square-foot facility, a project that is part of a 20-year partnership with ReCommunity. Workers and equipment at the facility sort recyclables including aluminum, plastics, paper, cardboard, tin and glass. The new facility can process 35 tons of recycling in an hour and 160,000 tons annually.
Officials say the facility created about 35 jobs, and they hope to double that number over time.
Gov. Jack Markell says the project was made possible by the state's universal recycling law, which helped Delaware move from "regional laggard" to a recycling leader. Under the law, all single-family homes and most restaurants and bars got recycling service in 2011.
