WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Officials in one Delaware county say they won't try to collect on about $218,000 that inadvertently went unbilled from thousands of public utility customers.
Nearly 7,000 residential customers of Artesian Water were not properly billed after the utility changed its billing system last year.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports that New Castle County officials have decided to not try to recoup the money. Chief Finance Officer Mike Coupe says the decision to take the loss was made in consultation with the county law department, but some county council members say they think it's a mistake.
Artesian has about 70,000 customers in the county.
Many of the customers were under-billed for less than $20. The bills of about 20,000 customers were accurate.
