Deep cuts are coming to the Colonial School district after voters turned down a referendum seeking a hike in the property tax to 47 cents per $100 of assessed property value.

81 staff is being let go with 59 of them teachers in order to save $2.7 million.

Colonial School District Superintendent Dorothy Linn told WDEL radio that the school system was also getting rid of paraprofessionals, transportation, nutrition services and administration.

Other programs getting a cut range from middle school and ninth grade sports to reducing band concerts and eliminating the Teacher of the Year banquet.

During yesterday’s school board meeting Lin said that the ban and cheerleaders would no longer be going to away games due to a cut in extracurricular transportation budget.
