Musician's Union Wants Say in Delaware Symphony Orchestra's Future

The musician’s union wants a voice on the board’s restructuring of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra with a promise to offer recommendations at the end of the year meeting this coming Monday.

More than 30 musicians met yesterday in Wilmington to review the symphony’s announcement that it is suspending its 2012-2013 season because of financial problems.

No specifics have been released yet by the musicians about just what they would recommend to the board.

But the Wilmington News Journal reports that several musicians said the suggestions might range from asking the symphony to resurrect its season in some form and re-establishing a website to promote public donations to insuring that musicians are represented on a committee that will evaluate business models for the symphony’s future.

DSO Executive Director Lee Williamson said the board made its decision to suspend the season after it became apparent there would be several years of structural deficits.
