More Weekend Snow, Schools Struggle With Days Off

It’s expected to be a snowy weekend in Delaware.

The national weather service says a new storm could bring 1 to 2 inches of snow across Delaware.

There’s a 30 percent chance of snow on Saturday with a 50 percent chance on Sunday.

Delmarva Power has restored nearly all of the customers who lost electricity two days ago when an ice storm hit trees and utility lines in Northern Delaware.

About 22,000 Maryland homes and businesses remain without power midday Friday, mostly in Frederick, Carroll and Baltimore counties.

Snow Days

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - The state Department of Education says more than half of Maryland's 24 school districts have reached or exceeded their allocated snow days this season.

The agency said Thursday that Allegany, Carroll, Charles, Garrett, Montgomery, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's, Somerset, and Worcester counties have gone beyond their built-in snow days. Frederick County made a similar announcement Wednesday, putting at least 10 districts over the limit.

Anne Arundel, Calvert, Howard and Prince George's counties and Baltimore City Public Schools say they've used all the snow days built into their calendars.

Districts that exceed their limit can look for ways to make up the excess days, such as extending the school year. They also can seek waivers from the state Board of Education from the requirement to have 180 days of instruction.
