Millions Hit the Roads for the Labor Day Holiday

Don Rush

35.5 million travelers will be making their way across the country for the Labor Day Weekend with 733-thousand of them right here in Maryland.

And, of those, 87$ will be going by car or around 640,000.

That is only up a half a percent because of the lateness of the holiday which occurs on September 7th.

The motor club’s spokesperson Christine Delise says, “It won’t be as busy as other holiday weekends. It seems that with Labor Day falling very late this year on the calendar, people have shown less inclination to travel. And, historically we see that when the holiday falls late on the calendar.”

And, Delise adds many motorist are staying closer to home.

“We’re also seeing a good percentage of travelers taking day trips. According to a survey of AAA Mid-Alantic residents, 35% will be taking day trips, while 63% will be staying one or more nights at their destination.”

AAA Mid-Atlantic also cautions motorists to be prepared as they expect to come to the aid of some 24- thousand of them this weekend.

Meanwhile, gasoline is much cheaper than last year with Maryland’s price for unleaded gas down to $2.39
a gallon as opposed to a year ago when it was $3.38.

In Salisbury it’s even lower at $2.22 a gallon.
