Mike McDermott to Run for State Senate

msa.maryland.gov

Delegate Mike McDermott made it official.

He will be running for the Maryland State Senate and is expected to challenge incumbent Democrat Jim Mathias in the general election for District 38.

The Worcester County Republican’s district had been redrawn and would have forced him to compete with another Republican.

After registering with the Board of Elections on Monday McDermott told the Salisbury Daily Times that he believes a Senate seat would give him more room to add amendments to legislation as well potentially be part of Republican filibusters.

McDermott has a law enforcement background and began his political career 8 years ago when he became Mayor of Pocomoke City.

He’s been in the House of Delegates since 2010.
