Memorial Service for Fallen Delaware Law Enforcement

The Delaware Fraternal Order of Police honored four fallen officers during the 45th annual Delaware Law Enforcement Memorial Service outside Legislative Hall yesterday.

One of the latest casualties was that of State Trooper Stephen Ballard who was shot to death by a suspect who eventually lost his life in a standoff with police at his family home in Middletown.

Ballard’s widow was in attendance.

The 32-year old officer was the 24th  Delaware State Trooper to be killed in the line of duty.  

Also was honored were Sgt. Stephen Floyd who lost his life during the hostage standoff at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center.

The ceremony also took note of the deaths of Cadet James Watts and Patrolman Robert DeFonte with the Dover Police department who were killed in an early morning accident on Sunday in West Dover.

On hand for the wreath laying ceremony were Governor John Carney and Attorney General Matt Denn.
