There was a solemn crowd at Georgetown’s Circle to pay honor this weekend to 47 year old Lt. Steven Floyd who died during a hostage standoff at the James T. Correctional Center.

In attendance was Delaware Governor John Carney who met privately with the family before joining the others at the Circle.

The Daily Time reports that the governor told the crowd that Floyd was a man who went to work every day in a very difficult and dangerous job.

He added that Floyd did it with courage.

Georgetown Mayor Bill West organized the service and was joined by state Senator Brian Pettyjohn, State Representative Ruth Briggs King and Sussex County officials.

The president of the prison guards union called Floyd a dedicated officer with a wife, children and grandchildren who worked overtime to help put his children through college.

Floyd was the only correctional officer killed in hostage taking and is reported to have yelled out to his colleagues to save their lives in crisis.

His death has been ruled a homicide by trauma.

The Daily Times reports that an investigation by state law enforcement officials has not yet been completed.

According to Evan W. Smith Funeral Services, a first visitation for Lt. Steven Floyd will be held Friday evening at Delaware State University Memorial Hall. A second visitation will take place Saturday morning at the same location, followed by a funeral service and interment at a cemetery in Frederica.
