BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland has stopped processing tax returns from 16 more Liberty Tax Service franchises over questionable returns.
Comptroller Peter Franchot said in a news release on Tuesday that his office has also suspended processing of returns from three private tax preparers. The comptroller said last week that his office had stopped processing tax returns from seven Liberty franchises.
Most of the suspended tax preparation services are in Baltimore. The comptroller says among the suspicions raised by returns from Liberty Tax Service are business income for people who don't own businesses; refund requests much higher than previous years; and inflated wage and withholding information.
