MD Audit Finds Problems with State Police Handling of Guns and Money

Maryland State Police Badge

A recent audit of the Maryland State Police has found problems with spending and handgun accounts.

The reports discovered that the records failed to identify specific activities when it came to expenses.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that this resulted in unusually large balances ranging from a $44 million deficit in one account and a $34 million surplus in another.

The report also said there were discrepancies in how the department kept track of firearms and their ownership.

It said this was due in part to a series of systems as well as the implementation of a new one with the 2013 requirement that gun buyers show a valid Handgun Qualification License.
