Shock has set in for the culinary community of Delmarva.
Award-winning Delaware restaurateur Matt Haley died Tuesday night while being transferred to a medical facility in New Delhi.
Haley’s business partner, Scott Kammerer, said that he was informed by State Department officials yesterday.
Kammerer said that Haley was involved in a high impact collision with a truck on Monday as he began a six week trip through northern Indian and Nepal.
Haley ran several southern Delaware restaurants and received the 2014 James Beard Humanitarian of the Year Award.
Alyssa Titus, president of Rehoboth Main Street and a fellow business-owner in the resort, told WBOC that Haley did a great deal for the restaurant business in Sussex County and especially the Rehoboth/Lewes area.
Meanwhile, political figures weighed in.
Delaware Senator Chris Coons called Haley one of the most remarkable people while Congressman John Carney said it was devastating news for all of Delaware.
Governor Jack Markell extended his sympathies to Haley’s family praising Haley for his efforts to improve his community.
