Maryland Gun Background Checks Lag Behind Demand

123rf.com

More than two dozen firearms have been given to people in Maryland who were barred from owning them because of their criminal records.

TheBaltimore Sun reports that officials say it’s because the state is unable to keep up with background checks.

A team of undercover troops recovered 30 guns which the dealers had legally released after the 7 day period.

The paper reports that there are more than 33-thousand gun purchase applications reaching back to mid-April which have not been processed.

State police are asking the gun sellers to continue to wait incurring the costs of keeping months’ worth of inventory on hand and some frustrated customers.

The Sun reports that most gun dealers have complied.
