ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland General Assembly will be electing the state's treasurer.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate will gather in a joint session to vote Wednesday.

Treasurer Nancy Kopp, a Democrat, is running for her fourth term.  A special joint legislative committee has recommended Kopp's re-election.

William Campbell, a Republican, also is in the ballot.

The treasurer is the state's chief representative in working with financial rating agencies and investment banking firms. The office also is the principal custodian of the state's cash deposits and money from bond sales.

The treasurer has one of three seats on the Board of Public Works, along with the governor and the comptroller. The board is responsible for approving state contracts exceeding $200,000.
