Marriage Equality on Fast Track in Delaware

official photo

Same-sex marriage is being put on a fast track with hopes for passage by July 1st.

The measure gets its first hearing in the General Assembly next week.

Delaware would become the 10th state to legalize same-sex marriage.

Supporters held a rally in Wilmington yesterday that included Governor Jack Markell, who said he will sign the legislation if it comes to his desk.

The main sponsor in the House of Representatives Melanie George Smith says she is confident that it will get approval from the legislature.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the measure has one lone Republican sponsor Representative Michael Ramone of Middle Run Valley.

Currently the state allows for same-sex civil unions.

And opponents of marriage equality vow to fight the legislation.

Nicole Theis, president of the Delaware Family Policy Council, says it is not the right of government to redefine marriage.
