ELKTON, Md. (AP) - Maryland State Police say a Cecil County Sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who drove toward the deputy.

Sgt. Marc Black, a state police spokesman, said in an email that the deputy, whom he did not identify, tried to conduct a traffic stop on an SUV about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday in Elkton.

Black says the vehicle did not stop and eventually turned around and accelerated toward the deputy. Black says the deputy fired his department-issued .40 caliber Glock pistol several times at the SUV.

Black says the vehicle traveled into a backyard and hit a tree.

The driver of the SUV, 37-year-old Terry Garnett Jr. of Elkton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Black says the deputy was put on routine administrative leave. State Police are investigating the incident.
