LEWES, Del. (AP) - Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting by a state trooper in Sussex County that left a man in critical condition.

Authorities say at about 1 p.m. Tuesday, a trooper saw a man who had active warrants driving on Postal Lane. Police say the man sped away, driving through several yards as the trooper followed.

Officials say the vehicle crashed into another car and the suspect ran into a cornfield. The trooper and another state police officer chased the suspect.

Police say the man grabbed a shovel and swung it at a trooper, who fired his service weapon, striking the man in the upper body.

Forty-two-year-old Keith M. Schueller of Rehoboth Beach is in critical condition at a local hospital. He is charged in two crimes committed earlier this month.
