Local Resistance to Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

BALTIMORE (AP) - Some Maryland residents are raising concerns about plans to open medical marijuana dispensaries near their homes.

The Baltimore Sun reports that after John Seifert signed a lease to allow a medical marijuana dispensary to operate in his shuttered Baltimore County flower shop, a county councilman introduced legislation that could potentially block the dispensary from opening there.

Similar conflicts have cropped up in other communities. In Anne Arundel County, some residents have opposed planned dispensaries there. And in Queen Anne County, officials have placed new restrictions on where dispensaries can be located.

Kate Bell, legislative counsel for the Marijuana Policy Project, said many people have misconceptions about dispensaries but change their mind when they see what the facilities actually look like.
