Kurt Schmoke Named President of the University of Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) - Former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke will become president of the University of Baltimore.

The University System of Maryland Board of Regents announced its appointment of Schmoke on Wednesday. He will take office in July.

In a statement on the university's website, university system chancellor William Kirwan said "Schmoke has an outstanding record of accomplishments and he understands that the University of Baltimore's mission is closely aligned with the advancement of the city."

Schmoke served as mayor of Baltimore from 1987 to 1999.

Schmoke is currently interim provost and general counsel at Howard University in Washington. He was dean of the Howard law school from 2003 to 2012.
