RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia residents donated at least $7.2 million to presidential candidates last year.

The Virginia Public Access Project says that Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Jeb Bush took in the most cash from Virginians in 2015.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Clinton received nearly $2.9 million and Bush got nearly $1.3 million.

In the Democratic race, Sanders brought in about $263,000 in donations from Virginia residents. Sen. Marco Rubio came in second place in fundraising on the Republican side with nearly $666,000.

The Virginia Public Access Project got the figures from the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington group that follows money in federal elections.

Virginia's presidential primary will be held March 1.
