Interior Secretary Ken Salazar came to Cambridge yesterday to celebrate the decision by President Obama to establish a monument Harriet Tubman who lead hundreds of slaves to freedom before the Civil War.
The monument was cover 480 acres next to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge that has been donated by The Conservation Fund.
The President designated the land for the monument under the Antiquities Act.
Patricia Ross Hawkins, a descendent of Tubman told the Salisbury Daily Times, that she has waited a long time for the tribute to her great-great-great Aunt who was the most famous of the conductors of the Underground Railroad.
Tubman was born around 1822 in Dorchester County escaping slavery when she was 27 years old.
But she returned at least 13 times to help others make the trek north to freedom.
