Ida May Wins Skipjack Race

Linda Roy Walls

Captain Shawn Ridgely and his Ida May took first place in the 58th Annual Skipjack race off Deal Island yesterday.

He’s been competing for the last 14 years but this is the first time he has won.

Coming in second was Captain Delmus Benton on the Fannie L. Daugherty and in third place was the Rebecca T. Ruark captained by Wade Murphy.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the winning Ida May was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The vessel was built in the 1880’s and was the oldest participating in yesterday’s race.

The skipjack was specifically designed to plow the water of the region and was used to harvest the estuary’s oysters.
