ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Gov. Larry Hogan has appointed a member of his administration to Maryland's highest court.

Hogan announced Wednesday the appointment of Joseph Getty to the seven-member Court of Appeals. Getty has been serving as Hogan's chief legislative officer, who acts as the Republican governor's lobbyist.

Getty is a former legislator who represented parts of Carroll and Baltimore counties. He served in the House from 1995 to January 2003. He was a senator from 2011 to 2015, when he took the job in the Hogan administration. He is a graduate from the University of Maryland School of Law.

Hogan also appointed Circuit Court Judges Donald Beachley and Melanie Shaw Geter to the Court of Special Appeals, the state's intermediate appellate court.

The appointments take effect immediately. They are subject to Senate confirmation.
