WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A woman from Delaware is becoming the first openly transgender person to speak at a major U.S. political party's national convention.

The Washington-based Human Rights Campaign says its press secretary, Sarah McBride, is set to speak Thursday at the Democratic National Convention in Cleveland.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the 25-year-old McBride is a Wilmington native who previously worked for Gov. Jack Markell and the late attorney general, Beau Biden.

She was a vocal proponent of Delaware's Gender Identity Nondiscrimination Act, signed by Markell in 2013.

The News Journal reports that McBride came out her junior year American University while serving as student body president.

She says she was notified last week that she will speak on the same day Hillary Clinton l accepts the party's nomination.

Former Governor Martin O'Malley (D-Md)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley praised Hillary Clinton and denounced Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention.

O'Malley, who ended his bid for the party's presidential nomination in February, spoke at the convention in Philadelphia on Wednesday night.

He said Clinton will fight for people as president, while Trump won't. O'Malley says the Republican nominee for president "feeds off of economic fears and failures."

O'Malley told the convention hall "to hell with Trump's American nightmare. We believe in the American dream."

O'Malley dropped out of the race midway through vote-counting in the Iowa caucuses, after his campaign failed to gain traction against Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
