An airplane and a helicopter collided in mid-air near an airport in Frederick, Maryland yesterday killing three and injuring two.

The accident occurred when a Cirrus SR22 plane heading to the Frederick Municipal Airport hit an R44 helicopter that was involved in a training exercise.

Captain Kevin Fox of the Frederick County Fire and Rescue said that the collision happened around 3:40 p.m. yesterday afternoon.

Fox said the injured victims were taken to Meritus Medical Center’s trauma center in Hagerstown.

But, he said he did not know the extent of their injuries.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that aerial footage showed the plane crashed into a stand of trees. But the two on board made it safely to the ground.

All three in the helicopter were killed when it hit the ground.

The crash prompted the closure of Interstate 70 during the rush hour traffic.
