With Heavy Rains Mosquito Population Booms

The heavy rains over the last few months have been cause for a heavy mosquito population.

Larry Lembeck, director of the Wicomico County mosquito control program, told the Salisbury Daily Times that this was the worst summer since he came here in 1979.

The paper reports that in the month of May Salisbury experienced nearly 10 inches of rain.

That’s 6 inches above normal.

The June figure is currently at 3.4 inches which is 2.2 inches above normal.

Wicomico County has had seven trucks out spraying from around 6 p.m. through 4 a.m.

But they say until the water disappears from ditches and fields the mosquitos will still keep coming.

For residents who want their property sprayed there is a county fee.

The Daily Times also reports that the state Agriculture Department has begun aerial spraying in Somerset County and in the Neck District of Dorchester County.
