Health Insurance Enrollments Down in Maryland

Signups for Maryland's Health connection are down by 10.4 percent so far.

That's despite efforts to increase the enrollment numbers, including a larger call center staff and a streamlined website.

February 15th was the enrollment deadline.

And, only 264,245 people have signed up.

That's compared to 295,077 during last year's longer open enrollment period.

But, the numbers are not final yet.

Andrew Ratner, director of marketing and research for the Maryland Health Connection told the Capital News Service that there were tens of thousands of incomplete application on the health connection website and that that it is not known which of these people will actually finish their applications before February 28th.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland officials say the state continues to work on recouping money from contractors involved in the state's badly flawed first rollout of its health exchange website.

Carolyn Quattrocki, the executive director of the state's health care exchange, declined to elaborate Wednesday, saying lawyers have asked her not to go into details. However, she says the state is "very actively engaged in that effort."

Maryland revamped its website with new technology last year for the second enrollment period between Nov. 15 and Feb. 15. Quattrocki says the second enrollment period has been much more successful, particularly because it was only half as long as the first one.

During the three-month period, a total of 264,245 residents enrolled. That includes 119,096 individuals in private health plans and 145,149 in Medicaid.

Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Nearly 400,000 Virginians have purchased health care through the government's health insurance marketplace.

The 384,612 consumers signed under the second year of open enrollment or were automatically re-enrolled. The numbers were announced Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Nationally, 11.4 million Americans sought the health insurance during the open enrollment period.

The department broke down the enrollment numbers by region, with the northern Virginia region topping the state at 151,000. The greater Richmond area and the Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Newport News region were virtually tied at 64,000 each.
