Harsh Winter Weather Takes Toll on Diamondback Terrapins

SLAUGHTER BEACH, Del. (AP) - Delaware wildlife officials say recent harsh winter weather has been posing a threat to coastal diamondback terrapins.

The Delaware State News reports the wind and waves, combined with the freezing temperatures, have wreaked particular havoc on those turtles.

The terrapins have been hibernating, but the strong waves have washed away much of their habitat, especially during the Jan. 23 storm.

Vickie Henderson, a member of the Delaware Council of Wildlife Rehabilitators and Educators, says turtles are easy prey for predators such as foxes, raccoons and predatory birds.

The council has been called by residents to assist at least nine turtles, most of which were at Slaughter Beach.

Henderson advises concerned citizens to slowly approach an animal that appears to be injured, and call a wildlife rescue group.
