Harris Backs Attacks on Eastern Shore Democrats

official photo

Congressman Andy Harris is making a big financial contribution to attacks on Eastern Shore Democrats seeking reelection to the state legislature.

The television ad takes aim at state Senator Jim Mathias and Delegate Norm Conway tying them to President Obama and calling them “tax-and-spend peas in a giant liberal pod.”

It adds, “That’s not what the Shore needs.”

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the Eastern Shore Republican is the chief donor to the group behind the ads – called A Great Maryland – contributing $150-thouand from the committee Andy Harris for Congress.

The paper reports that Harris issued a statement saying that when asked about the political action committee, he supports efforts like this one against “top politicians who are hurting the Shore economy.”

Democrats were surprised at the attacks.

State Senator Jim Mathias who is seeking a second term said that he never said one word about Harris and now believes the Republican has no desire to work together in his district.

Meanwhile, Delegate Norm Conway said that even though Harris has a history of negativity the ad surprised him.

He called the move “very poor.”

Harris spokesman Chris Meeks told the Daily Times that Harris did not come up with the group that was formed in August but rather conservative leaning constituents sought him out for his ideas and leadership in the matter.
