Gun Offender Registry Measure Delayed in Wilmington

Facebook

A gun offender registry measure has been delayed by the Wilmington City Council.

The legislation would have included a data base similar to the one for sex offenders to be registered with the police after their release from prison.

They would be required to check in over a three year period.

But Council President Hanifa Shabazz told her colleagues that it would be unreasonable to expect people getting out prison to get all the documents needed for proof of residence with the mandated five day period.

This, she added, would place an additional burden as ex-offenders seek employment and transportation to start their new life.

Councilmember Vash Turner favored a delay on the vote adding that he did not want to make a decision on the fly.
