Group Calls for VA Motorists to Keep Confederate Flag License Plates

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Attorneys for a Southern heritage group are urging members to resist a recall of Virginia license plates with an image of the Confederate battle flag.

A federal judge in Danville cleared the way for the state to banish the flag from Sons of Confederate Veterans license plates. But attorneys for the group say the judge did not call for the existing plates to be returned to the state.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles says it has reached out to the Sons of Confederate Veterans to discuss a redesign of the plates. The DMV also will ultimately seek the return of nearly 1,700 plates that contain the image of the flag.

Attorneys for the group say they are also advising members to appeal the judge's ruling.
